How to Use

  • • Enter folder/file names, one per line
  • • Use spaces (2 per level) to indicate nesting
  • • Files are detected by having an extension (.tsx, .js, etc.)
  • • Perfect for README files and documentation

How do I create a folder tree for a README?

Enter one file or folder per line, indent children with two spaces, and copy the generated directory tree into a fenced text block in your README. Use Simple style when you need ASCII-only connectors.

  1. Replace the sample with your project folders and files.
  2. Indent child entries beneath their parent. Disable file icons for plain text output.
  3. Choose a connector style, then copy the result or download directory-tree.txt.

Worked example

Input and settings
src
  components
    Button.tsx
README.md
Output
├── src
│ └── components
│ └── Button.tsx
└── README.md

Supported behavior and limitations

The example uses the default thin connectors with file icons disabled. This tool reads an indented list; it does not scan your disk or verify that files exist. File and folder counts are estimated from dots in names, so extensionless files and dotted folders can be misclassified.

Which tree style uses only ASCII characters?

Choose Simple for |-- and `-- connectors. The thin and heavy line styles use Unicode box-drawing characters. Turn off file icons if you need entirely plain output.

Why does the tree lose alignment in Markdown?

Wrap it in a fenced code block with three backticks before and after the tree. A monospace code block preserves spaces and connector alignment.
